In unit 11, we learned about the two receptive language skills, listening and reading. Both are equally important and each have their own set of problems when teaching students. Listening is often more difficult because dialogue or spoken English is not fixed on a page, as with reading. Students can usually only listen once and have to decode the meaning in a short time. With reading, students can read multiple times in order to better understand a text. When finding material, a teacher needs to find something that will be interesting to the students-catering to all students over time-and make sure that it is suitable to their level, but also challenging enough to increase their confidence. I think it is important to try to combine reading/listening for a purpose and for entertainment, in order to try and bring the most enjoyment and benefit to your students. If the students truly enjoy what they are studying, it will make the difficulties they face much easier to manage.
