After studying Unit 11, I am more aware of the receptive skills in language: reading and listening. As a teacher, I have seen students who are good in reading words however lack in understanding them. This is why I agree with the statement, “reading and listening are not simply matters for the eyes and ears, but also a matter of using our minds to literally understand words and process them in our ‘pre-existent knowledge’ to gain true understanding.” With that in mind, this unit helped me understand why and how I can help my students improve on their reading and listening skills.
