In the spring of 2006, I was approached by one of my former students with the idea of joining her and her volunteer group to teach English in China. I was intrigued by the idea, but wondered how one who knew no Chinese could teach English. I had teaching experience from some twenty years prior, and had even majored in English with a BS degree in Education. To the young ESL teacher, seven-year-old Bobby seems inattentive and unmotivated. He cannot sit at his desk for five seconds and absolutely refuses to follow the logical, sequential steps she lays out for each assignment. She has tried lots of ideas to make her lessons more interesting, however, what she does not realize is that Bobby is an abstract random learner in a concrete sequential classroom. We organize our course into 12 modules. All modules with the exception of the last require approximately 16 hours of study – 175 hours overall. The last module is a research based thesis, which generally requires 75 hours to finish. At least 250 hours are therefore required to complete the course. The 12-unit research-based course is divided into two sections, and participants initially have access to modules 1 to 6. Once the payment for your ITTT online course has been received, you will be sent a username and password that will allow you to log in to your course control panel.
