TEFL Videos - TESOL TEFL Reviews - Video Testimonial - Brian
Brian took the 120-hour online TEFL course from ITTT so he could teach English abroad. In this TEFL review he tells us that as well as the many topics covered by the course he appreciated the flexibility that allowed him to complete it at his own pace.
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
This unit explored the pros and cons of both authentic and created materials as well as the advantages and disadvantages of course books. It helped me evaluate different strategies that can be employed when dealing with course material and emphasized the importance of adapting and supplementing the material used in classes. It also highlighted certain factors of course material, such as relevancy, difficulty, and balance, that may come into play in a teacher's considerations of a class. Overall this unit helped me examine course material in the perspective of a teacher as well as of a student. All material can be devided into 2 groups: authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are real, interesting and can provide students with confidence.Created materials are usually designed by the teacher and can be graded to the level of the students. Created materials include crosswords, picture stories, flashcards, puzzles. Course books consist of student's book, workbook, teacher's book and different additional materials. A good teacher should omit not relevant exercises from the book and replace them with more suitable materials as well as adapt materials for each class.
