In this unit I learned to quantify the different usages of the various past tenses. In my own English speech, I of course use all of the tenses described. However, I have never thought about exactly why I would choose the past perfect verses the past perfect continuous. Now know that the past perfect describes an action that was completed before other actions in the past and the past perfect continuous describes something that had been going on before other actions in the past but which was not necessarily completed at the time the other action took place.
